Fire!

Jair and Genesis were close. Before Adam and Lilith even awakened, they ate carrots and ran off to play with the Others.

Lilith felt ill first thing in the morning. It was hard to be certain if this was a sign of a child as the smell of unwashed bodies often turned her stomach.

Like the days before, each day was a struggle to stay fed and to gain ground rather than lose. The bitterness in Lilith's heart began to ease as her determination grew.

Each day might be the same as the day before, but their lot in life improved little by little.

Adam was a good provider, even if he was prone to filthiness and balking at Lilith's "crazy" ideas. Lilith decided that she would stay and raise her children with him. Even the beauty of the desert was taking root in Lilith's heart. Despite the hardships it presented, Lilith began to grow fond of sound of the wind howling through the canyons.

In the late night, Lilith was awakened by the quickening of a child.

The morning rush for their bushes was irritating to even Adam now.

The day started out routinely enough.

But then one of their seats around the fire caught on fire! It was the one Jair was sitting on! Adam rushed in to battle the blaze as Jair scrambled away.

Adam managed to keep the fire from spreading to another seat or the tents.

But they were all shaken. Lilith was frightened, thinking how close she came to losing a child. The blackened stump and scorched earth reminded her of the perils they faced each day in simply trying to stay fed.

As Adam and Lilith ate, Adam remarked, "I need to find a larger tree to make another seat."

Lilith gently pointed out, "We need two. We have another child to sit around the fire."

"We will venture out from the camp today. You will come with me. There are more frogs and places to be dug there."

Lilith wasn't certain how to take Adam's words. He'd not sought her out to travel with him before. But she did not question it aloud.

They returned tired and filthy, about the same time her sons returned to camp. Genesis and Jair were becoming best friends.

While Lilith grew more accepting of her challenges, she didn't stop pressing Adam to think more ambitiously. She wanted easier conditions for them all, but that would take shrewd thinking and hard work. For today, she wanted him to double the width of their murky pool so that two of them could try to cleanse at the same time.

She also told him she was with child. Adam's reaction was stony silence.

He simply went about providing food for their ever increasing family.

He was very skilled at fishing now.

Adam achieved Level 10 in the Fishing Skill

Lilith's sons helped bring food into the household too.

Lilith told her sons there would be another child coming.

When the sun rose and set, it bathed the desert in a lovely light.

The tents were so far from the bushes that Lilith peed herself again.

Even Adam was starting to wish for a better bathing and toileting situation.

Lilith was complaining again to Adam as they cooked fish over the fire, "Adam, we must have a proper way to cleanse and relieve ourselves."

"Lilith, that would take clean, running water on our camp. Look around, do you see clean, running water here?"

Genesis interrupted, "Father, I heard running water when I was playing in the cave."

Adam replied, "Son, that was the desert wind you heard."

"No, father, it was water!"

Adam grudgingly agreed to investigate the running water "soon".

Lilith's back began to spasm painfully during their evening meal. Lilith wasn't certain if it was the pangs of birthing or her busy day traversing the desert and digging.
